Your handbook says days. Your payslip says hours. This converts between the two.
Pick your real shift length, not the standard eight, and the calculator handles the leftover hours that do not make a full day.

How to convert PTO hours to days
Divide your hours by the length of your normal workday.
PTO hours / hours in your workday = days off
Eighty hours on an 8 hour schedule is 10 days. The same 80 hours on a 7.5 hour schedule is 10.67 days, which works out as 10 full days plus 5 spare hours.
Going the other way is just as simple.
PTO days x hours in your workday = PTO hours
Why payroll tracks PTO in hours
Your handbook says two weeks. Your payslip says 80 hours. Both mean the same thing, but payroll needs hours for a reason.
Hours handle part days. If you leave at lunchtime, payroll deducts 4 hours. There is no clean way to record half a day in a days based system.
Hours also handle people with different schedules. A company with 8 hour staff, 10 hour shift staff, and part timers cannot give everyone ten days and have it mean the same amount of work missed.
So the hours figure is the real one. Days are the human translation.
Common PTO conversions
These assume an 8 hour workday and a 5 day week.
| PTO hours | Days | Work weeks |
| 8 hours | 1 day | 0.2 weeks |
| 20 hours | 2.5 days | 0.5 weeks |
| 40 hours | 5 days | 1 week |
| 80 hours | 10 days | 2 weeks |
| 120 hours | 15 days | 3 weeks |
| 160 hours | 20 days | 4 weeks |
| 240 hours | 30 days | 6 weeks |
Change your shift length and every row moves. On a 10 hour day, 80 hours becomes 8 days rather than 10.
If you do not work a standard 8 hour day
Plenty of people do not, and using 8 by default gives the wrong answer.
Four day weeks.
Ten hour days are common. Eighty hours is 8 days rather than 10, and 2 work weeks either way.
Shift work.
Twelve hour shifts mean 80 hours is under 7 shifts. Some employers hold a separate PTO bank for shift staff for this reason.
Part time.
A 4 hour day turns 80 hours into 20 days. Part time staff often accrue fewer hours but each hour covers more of their shift.
Seven and a half hour days.
Common in offices with an unpaid lunch. That half hour adds up, and it is why 80 hours becomes 10.67 days.
Set the workday field to match your real shift, not the company standard.
What leftover hours mean
Most conversions do not land on a whole number.
A balance of 100 hours on an 8 hour day is 12.5 days. That is 12 full days plus 4 hours, which most employers let you take as a half day.
Whether you can use those spare hours depends on your policy. Some employers allow time off in one hour blocks. Others insist on half days or full days only, which means small leftovers sit there until you build up enough for a proper day.
Check the minimum increment in your handbook before you plan around a leftover.
