75 hours of PTO is 9.38 days at a standard 8 hour day, and exactly 10 days if your workday is 7.5 hours. That second figure is why 75 hours turns up on so many payslips, as this page explains.

Why 75 hours is such a common payslip number

If your contract is a 37.5 hour week, your working day is 7.5 hours, and two weeks of leave is 10 of those days: 10 times 7.5 is exactly 75 hours. So a 75 hour balance is simply a fortnight’s leave written in hours, the same way a 40 hour contract shows the same fortnight as 80 hours.

Your weekly contractHours in your dayTwo weeks of leave is
37.5 hours7.575 hours
40 hours880 hours
50 hours10100 hours

It also appears on part time payslips for a different reason: pro rata allowances scale with your hours, so a part timer’s yearly entitlement often works out at an odd-looking figure like 75 rather than a round number of days.

Three ways to spend 75 hours

The planHours it usesWhat is left
Two full weeks away (7.5 hour days)75Nothing, the balance is spent exactly
Nine days away (8 hour days)723 hours, roughly half a short day
Five long weekends (one 8 hour day each)4035 hours, enough for another 4 days

The first plan is the neat one: on a 37.5 hour contract, 75 hours is a complete two week break with nothing left over and nothing owed. On an 8 hour contract it nearly is, but you fall 5 hours short of two full weeks, which catches people out when they book the flights before checking.

75 hours against the usual allowances

80 hours (2 standard weeks)10 days10.67 days
100 hours12.5 days13.33 days
120 hours (3 standard weeks)15 days16 days

So 75 hours sits just below the standard two week balance if your day is 8 hours, and matches it exactly if your day is 7.5. The calculator above covers any other figure, and the PTO hours to days calculator converts any balance at your own shift length.

How fast a 75 hour balance builds up

Yearly allowancePer biweekly periodTime to reach 75 hours
80 hours3.08 hoursAbout 11.2 months
120 hours4.62 hoursAbout 7.5 months
160 hours6.15 hoursAbout 5.6 months

On the most common allowance it takes most of a working year to bank 75 hours from zero, which is why spending it in one go usually means saving it deliberately. The PTO accrual calculator shows the date your own balance would reach 75 on your schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How many days is 75 hours of PTO?

9.38 days if your workday is 8 hours, exactly 10 days at 7.5 hours, and 7.5 days at 10 hours. Divide 75 by the length of your workday for any other pattern.

How many weeks is 75 hours of PTO?

1.88 work weeks on a 40 hour week. On a 37.5 hour contract it is exactly 2 weeks of your normal working time.

Why does my balance say 75 hours?

Most likely because your contract is 37.5 hours a week, so two weeks of leave is 10 days of 7.5 hours. It also appears as a pro rata figure for part time staff, whose allowance is scaled to their hours.

Is 75 hours enough for a two week holiday?

Yes if your workday is 7.5 hours, exactly. If your workday is 8 hours, two weeks away needs 80 hours, so you are 5 hours short and would need one short day unpaid, from next year’s balance, or worked back.

How long does it take to earn 75 hours of PTO?

About 11.2 months on an 80 hour yearly allowance, about 7.5 months on 120 hours, and about 5.6 months on 160 hours, starting from zero and taking nothing.

What is 75 hours of PTO worth in money?

75 times your hourly rate, before tax. That is $1,500 at $20 an hour, $1,875 at $25, and $2,250 at $30. The PTO payout calculator estimates what would actually reach you after tax.
