Why combine holidays and leave
A holiday next to a weekend is a 3 day break for zero PTO. Add 2 PTO days and it becomes 5. Add 4 and it becomes 7 or more.
This is the easiest way to multiply time off, because holidays are paid days you get regardless. The calculator shows exactly what each combination gives you, so you can pick the stretch with the best return per PTO day. A single well chosen bridge week often beats two scattered long weekends.
A worked example
Nina spots a stretch with 2 public holidays close together. She attaches 5 PTO days around them. That is 7 workdays off, which pulls in 2 weekend days on each side for some calendars, giving 9 to 11 total days off.
She spent 5 PTO days and got more than a week. Without the holidays, those same 5 days would have given her just 7. The holidays nearly doubled her return. Enter your own numbers above to find your best stretch.
Holiday leave around the world
Every country has its own holiday calendar, but the strategy is the same.
- In the US, Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks give the longest bridges. Our maximize PTO calculator maps the best 2026 stretches.
- In the UK, Easter and the late May bank holiday stretch well with just a few annual leave days.
- In Australia, the Christmas to New Year shutdown pairs perfectly with annual leave, and leave loading adds extra pay on top.
Enter your own holidays above. The math works for any country.
Common holiday leave mistakes
- Spending PTO on the holiday itself. Holidays are already paid days off. Never waste a PTO day on one.
- Forgetting the days between two holidays. When holidays fall days apart, the workdays between them are the highest value PTO you can spend.
- Booking travel before requesting the PTO. Secure the days off first, then book the non refundable parts.
- Ignoring the weekend math. Every 5 workdays off in a row gains 2 weekend days. Plan stretches in multiples of 5 where you can.

Frequently asked questions
How do I combine holidays with PTO?
Place PTO days directly before or after public holidays. The calculator above totals the full stretch including weekends.
How many PTO days do I need for a week off?
Often just 3 to 4, if a public holiday sits inside the week. The rest comes from weekends.
Do public holidays use up my PTO?
No. Public holidays are separate paid days off in most companies.
What is a bridge day?
A PTO day placed between a holiday and a weekend, turning separate days off into one long break.
Can I do this with sick leave too?
It is not advised. Sick leave is for illness. Use vacation or PTO days for planned bridges.
Which months have the most holidays?
In the US, November and December. Check your country’s calendar each January and plan early.
What if two holidays fall in the same week?
That is the jackpot. The workdays between them become the highest value PTO days of your year. Book them first.
Should I tell my manager my strategy?
You do not need to explain the math. Just request the dates early like any other PTO.
Do part time workers get the same holiday benefit?
Part time workers usually get public holidays off or pro rated holiday pay, depending on the employer. The bridging strategy still works: attach your PTO days to the holidays you do get and stretch them the same way.
